In 1970 I sat on the floor in my small bedroom in Glenwood, Hawaii, pen in hand, drew the following mandalas by kerosene light. Selecting a color, I began in the center of each without thought of anything but making the first single shape. Each suggested the next one. No measurements other than eye, the mandalas grew from their centers. No outlines were used. My wife was next to me, sleeping between labor contractions. I finished all of the drawings that night. Our son was born in my hands at 10:30 in the morning. The art of drawing kept me centered and focused on the miracle taking place. I refer to them as 'birthings'. |
